Changing ideas about the importance of oral health, especially in children, is one of the greatest challenges we face at Delta Dental of Colorado and our foundation.
Delta Dental of Colorado’s mission is to improve the oral health of the communities we serve by eradicating childhood tooth decay. As we work together to build awareness of the importance of oral health, we have to find new ways to reach our members and the larger community.
Oral health problems can be prevented with good brushing and flossing, healthy diet, and regular dental exams. Unfortunately, too many children in Colorado go without care because they lack adequate dental coverage.
Child Health Plan Plus (CHP+) is public, low-cost health insurance for children. It’s available to those whose parents earn too much to qualify for Medicaid but not enough to pay for private health insurance. Delta Dental of Colorado has been the program’s dental administrator for the past 15 years. During that time, the program has served well over 400,000 Colorado children.
Still, many of the benefits go unused. In 2015, the company started text-messaging parents of CHP+ subscribers. We want to make sure they are aware that their child also has dental coverage through this state program. In 2016, we sent 265,000 text messages in both English and Spanish. They focused on the importance of preventive care and the connections between oral and overall health. More than 20,000 unique claims were submitted for children whose parents received the text messages.
We know dental insurance is not top of mind. We’re working to help families better use their benefits for preventive care.
